WORLD MEDIA COVERAGE ON ESCAP INCREASES
Bangkok (United Nations Information Services) --World media coverage of UNESCAP has increased, the eighth edition of the Eye on ESCAP 2005, an annual compilation of media coverage reveals.
Some 300 media organizations—electronic as well as print-- (websites included) from 36 countries including Scandinavia, Africa, and the United States. (not including UN websites, newsletters, etc.) wrote over a thousand items of news in 15 languages ranging from Norwegian to Urdu. Korean besides English was the language that was most widely used.
The Ministerial Conference of the Environment and Development held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, the launch of the Economic and Social Survey in 14 cities in the region, and the 61st first session of the Commission held in Bangkok were the most covered events in 2005.
The clippings largely news stories and op-ed pieces culled from websites as well as newspapers and magazines were divided into the three main areas of focus. Managing Globalization (380) was the most covered followed by the Environment and Social issues.
Besides print, a number of national and international electronic media ranging from CNN, CNBC Asia, BBC, Star TV, Hong Kong, China, and the Voice of America covered UNESCAP. In addition National TV stations such as Doordashan, India, ABS-CBN, the Philippines No 1 station in Manila through to Arirang TV in the Republic of Korea and Radio Thailand interviewed the Executive Secretary on a range of issues.
