First MOU between UNESCAP and Korean water supply company

BANGKOK (United Nations Information Services) -- The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water).

The MOU covers regional water resource management, as well as risk management to reduce the impact of disasters such as floods, droughts, typhoons in the Asia-Pacific region.

“This is the first MOU to be signed between UNESCAP and a national enterprise from a member country of UNESCAP,” said Executive Secretary of UNESCAP Kim Hak-Su.

The MOU was signed by Kim Hak-Su and the President of K-water Kwak Kyul-ho at the Headquarters of UNESCAP in Bangkok.

UNESCAP and K-water agreed to work together to promote regional cooperation in water resources, especially in identifying opportunities for direct investment, and training within the region.

Risk management involves building on existing collaborative projects such as those currently implemented under the frameworks of the UNESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee and the Network of Asian River Basin Organizations.

K-water has been working in Korea’s water resources since 1967.

This latest MOU comes four days after UNESCAP signed an MOU with Microsoft for the UN’s first information communications technology training centre for government officials in the Asian and Pacific region in Incheon, Republic of Korea.
