UNESCAP, WHO WORKSHOP TO IMPROVE DISABILITY
STATISTICS
Bangkok (United Nations Information Services)
-- The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia
and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the World Health Organization
(WHO) are discussing testing protocols and instruments for measuring
disability statistics at the Third Workshop for Improving Disability
Statistics and Measurement.
The workshop at the UNCC, Bangkok runs for two
days from 3 May 2005. It involves
statisticians and health experts from China, Fiji, India, Indonesia,
Macao (China), Mongolia, and Philippines, which have volunteered
for pilot testing.
“Disability is a dynamic process and data collection has
to assess both individual attributes and the characteristics
of the environment that may affect an individual’s participation
and capture the full spectrum of disability,” said UNESCAP’s
Chief of Statistics Mr Andrew Flatt.
The main objective of this workshop is to discuss
the testing protocols and instruments along with the implementation
strategies and national work plans.
Workshop participants will be acquainted with
the details of the study protocols and questionnaire and the
use of the guidelines that have been prepared in connection
with interviewer training.
Operational issues such as sampling, quality control,
and data entry will also be discussed. Each team is expected
to develop a national action plan to implement the pre-testing
activities.
