UN SEMINAR TO EXAMINE SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS
OF MIGRATION
Labour migration policies, trafficking,
smuggling of migrants on agenda
BANGKOK (UN Information Services) – The
social implications of international migration will be the theme
of a regional seminar jointly organized by UNESCAP, the UN Population
Fund, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and
the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development
from 24-26 August in Bangkok.
The seminar will review recent trends in migration,
labour migration policies and programmes, migration and health,
and trafficking and smuggling of migrants, and explore the social
implications of the phenomenon in the Asia-Pacific region. Organizers
expect the meeting to be of value to participants in making
national migration policies consistent with other development
goals.
“Because of the increasing magnitude of
international migration in the UNESCAP region, it is important
that national governments incorporate it into their economic
and social development strategies, and take account of migration
when preparing population and labour force projections,”
said UNESCAP Executive Secretary Mr. Kim Hak-Su.
Parliamentarians, representatives of government
agencies, non-governmental and international organizations,
and academia, as well as experts in the field, are expected
to take part in the three-day seminar.
The outcome of the meeting will provide input
to the High-Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development,
to be held in New York in 2006.
