Annual International Day of Peace observance at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC), Bangkok

BANGKOK (United Nations Information Services) -- The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in collaboration with UNESCO and Rotary District 3350 R.I. will be observing the International Day of Peace on Tuesday, 21 September under the Theme: Peace through sports.

The observance will include a panel discussion on the topics of “Consultation, Cooperation & Consensus: Steps in Peace-Building”, as reflected in the programme below.

  • Ms. Keiko Okaido, Deputy Executive Secretary and Officer-in-charge, a.i. of UNESCAP reads the UN Secretary General’s Message and welcomes the participants
  • Keynote address by Gen. Yuthasak Sasiprapa, President of the National Olympics Committee, Thailand
  • Peace education and values by Mr. Gordon Johnston, Programme Coordinator of UNESCO
  • Introduction to UNESCO programme on ethics and its significance for peace, communication and understanding by Assistant Prof, Dr. Soraj Hongladarom, Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University
  • Children and Youth: Innocent Victims of Conflict and War Potential Bridges for Harmony and Peace by Dr.Gamini Abeysekera, former UNICEF representative to Thailand, Special Advisor,Thai Government House; and Guest Lecturer,Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).
  • Media presentation/Peace Channel? by Mr. Arne Fjortoft, Secretary General, Worldview International Foundation
  • Introduction to Rotary international programme relating to peace, peace education and youth experiences by Khun Salakjit Nopakun, member of Rotary international programme and Khun Pichaya Chooekawong, exchange student.
  • Non-violence and methods of transcending conflicts by Khun Naree Charoenpolpiriya, Trainer transcend and Khun Chayanit Poonyarat from Nonviolence International Southeast Asia
  • Closing remarks by PP. Damrongphand Snitwong, Rotary, District Governor 3350 R.I.
