CLOSING PRESS CONFERENCE SET FOR BEIJING +10 MEETING

Organizers to give scorecard for Asia-Pacific region

Bangkok (United Nations Information Services) -- A closing press conference to announce the outcome of the High-level Intergovernmental Meeting to Review Regional Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action and its Regional and Global Outcomes will be held on Friday, 10 September 2004 from 12:30-13:15 hrs at the UN Conference Centre, Bangkok.

Participants include H.E. Ms. Habiba Sarabi, Minister of Women's Affairs, Afghanistan and Chairperson of the Meeting, Mr. Kim Hak-Su, UNESCAP Executive Secretary, and Ms. Thelma Kay, Chief, UNESCAP Emerging Social Issues Division.

At the press conference the organizers will present the results of the meeting including a stocktaking of achievements since the ground-breaking 1995 Women's Conference in Beijing and factors hampering women's advancement in the region.

Approximately 400 participants from 38 countries including a dozen Ministers have been attending the four-day meeting which is examining such issues as globalization, ICT, governance, HIV/AIDS, gender-mainstreaming of women's human rights, partnerships, and working with men.

The output of the Meeting will be the regional input into the global Review and Appraisal of the Implementation of Beijing Platform for Action, to be carried out by the UN Commission on the Status of Women in March 2005.
