PARTNERSHIPS SEEN AS KEY TO GENDER EQUALITY
Ministers, government representatives meet
to review progress since 1995
Bangkok (United Nations Information Services)
-- Government Ministers and representatives responsible for
gender equality and women's empowerment will gather in Bangkok
next week to take stock of achievements since the ground-breaking
Women's Conference almost ten years ago and identify common
factors hampering women's advancement in the region.
Working under the theme 'Partnerships: Moving
Beijing Forward,' the High-level Intergovernmental Meeting to
Review Regional Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action
and its Regional and Global Outcomes will be held from 7-10
September at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok.
A senior Thai Government official is expected
to open the meeting and give the keynote address.
Other participants of note include Mr. Kim Hak-Su,
UNESCAP Executive Secretary, Ms. Radhika Coomaraswamy, former
UN Special Representative on Violence Against Women, Professor
Jayati Ghosh, Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi), Ms. Nancy
Hafkin, Director of Knowledge Working (Boston), Ms. Maire Bopp
Du Pont, Chief Executive Officer, Pacific Islands AIDS Foundation,
and Ms. Socorro Reyes, Founding President of the Centre for
Legislative Development (Manila).
Approximately 410 participants from 38 countries are expected
to attend. Delegates include representatives from Governments,
intergovernmental organizations, UN agencies and NGOs.
A notable side event - 'Young Men Speak Out' -
will feature five young men who are actively promoting gender
equality and challenging violence against women in their communities.
On the agenda are a host of panel discussions
and parallel sessions on such issues as globalization, ICT,
governance, HIV/AIDS, partnerships, and working with men.
The theme of the meeting underscores the importance
of partnerships at all levels - between and across countries,
sectors, themes, institutions, and men and women - as facilitating
commitment and decisive action for gender equality.
The output of the Meeting will be the regional
input into the global Review and Appraisal of the Implementation
of Beijing Platform for Action, to be carried out by the UN
Commission on the Status of Women in March 2005.
The meeting is being organized by UNESCAP's Gender
and Development Section. Further information may be found at:
