Bangkok (United Nations Information Services) -- Regional media interested in attending the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP)'s 60th Commission Session, to be held in Shanghai, China from 22-28 April 2004 at the Shanghai International Conference Centre and hosted by the government of China, are invited to submit applications for media accreditation no later than 15 April. The theme of the session is: "Meeting the challenges in an era of globalization by strengthening regional development cooperation."

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the Vice President of China, Mr. Zeng Qinghong, are expected to attend the opening of the Ministerial Segment on 26 April.

Highlights of the 60th Commission include a High-Level Visionary Panel for Asia-Pacific 2020, 26 April, which brings together five former heads of state/government from the Asian and Pacific region to identify the key challenges facing Asia-Pacific in the coming years.

Among the panelists are Mr. Anand Panyarachun, former Prime Minister of Thailand, Mr. Kim Dae-Jung, former President of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Fidel Ramos, former President of the Philippines, Mr. Farooq Leghari, former President of Pakistan, and Sir Peter Kenilorea, former Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands. Other events of note include the signing of the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Asian Highway Network (26 April), Asia-Pacific Business Forum (24-25 April), and the High-Level Panel Discussion on Knowledge-Based Disaster Management (27 April).

It is of special significance for UNESCAP to hold its 60th session at its birth place. The Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE), the forerunner of UNESCAP, was founded in Shanghai in 1947.
