INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ERADICATION OF POVERTY TO BE OBSERVED AT THE UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE CENTRE ON FRIDAY, 17 OCTOBER 2003

Dr. Krasae Chanavongse, Phra Payom Kallayano and Ms. Natanon Thavisin will join as panelists

BANGKOK (United Nations Information Services) - The United Nations in Bangkok will be observing the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Friday, 17th October with the emphasis on promoting awareness for the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries.

The general public and media representatives who are interested in poverty-related issues are invited to attend this important event, which is also open to NGOs and students.

The programme:

* A welcome address and a message by the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan will be presented by Mr. Kim Hak-Su, Executive Secretary of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).
* Presentation of a brief history of the Day by International Movement ATD Fourth World, a French NGO, and testimonies contributed by persons who have overcome adverse circumstances.
* Panel Discussion I on "Barriers to reaching the poor: Do they exist and how do we overcome them? " by Mr. Sarawuth Prathumraj; Prof. Banthorn Ondam, Advisor, Assembly of the Poor; Phra Payom Kallayano of Wat Suan Kaew; Mr. Suwit Watnu of Human Setlement Foundation; Rev. Wirach Amonpattana of Ruamrudee International School, and Ms. Sauwalak Kittiprapas, UNICEF Thailand Office.
* Panel Discussion II on "Building new pathways towards a cooperative future with the poor" by Dr. Krasae Chanavongse, Advisor to the Prime Minister; Ms. Natanon Thavisin, Permanent Secretary of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration; Ms. Arporn Wangsang of Human Rights Commission; Prof. Amonsiri Sansuratikul of Thammasart University, Ms. Uajit Virojtrairatana, Human Rights Commission; and Ms. Ornuma Kasetpuetphol, Radio Broadcaster.

The United Nations declared 17th October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty to promote awareness about the need to fight poverty and the unequal distribution of development.
