UNESCAP to promote rights
of persons with disabilities
BANGKOK (UN Information Services)-A meeting to
promote human rights issues focusing on equalizing opportunities
for persons with disabilities will be held from 2-4 June 2003
at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok.
The Expert Group Meeting and Seminar on an International
Convention to Protect and Promote the Rights and Dignity of
Persons with Disabilities will be organized by the United Nations
Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP)
in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Economic
and Social Affairs (DESA), New York.
The Meeting will be opened by Mr. Kim Hak-Su,
Executive Secretary of
UNESCAP, at 9 am on Monday, 2 June 2003. The participants will
include His Excellency Mr. Wardak, Minister of Martyrs and Disabled,
Afghanistan, a representative from Timor-Leste and Ms. Venus
IIgan, Chairperson of Disabled People's International.
Over 80 participants are expected to attend the
Meeting to exchange views, knowledge and experience and develop
new skills and gain understanding of norms and standards related
to disability.
In light of the extended Asian and Pacific Decade
of Disabled Persons
(2003-2012), the meeting will focus on the role of public information
activities to promote awareness and support for development-based
approaches to the advancement of persons with disabilities.
It will also attempt to enhance sub-regional cooperation in
building national capacities and institutions that work with
persons with disabilities in Asia and the Pacific.

to attend the opening session on Monday, 2 June 2003 at 9:00
am and subsequent sessions at the United Nations Conference
Centre, Rajadamnern Nok Ave, Bangkok.
