COMPREHENSIVE HIV/AIDS STUDY LAUNCHED ON 8
MAY
Seminar on tackling new 21st century diseases
with lessons learnt
from HIV/AIDS
United Nations Information Services (Bangkok)
-- UNESCAP will launch three new publications that help governments
respond better to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in their countries.
Mr. Kim Hak-Su, UNESCAP Executive Secretary, will
present the troika to the media starting at 11.00 hrs on 8 May
in the UN Conference Centre, Bangkok, followed by a panel discussion
on Asia's emerging health crises. Refreshments will be
served starting at 10.30 hrs.
"The SARS pandemic has alerted both governments
and the people of the UNESCAP region to the high social and
economic toll that any public health crisis can take. While
there are signs that the worst of the current crisis is over,
there are numerous issues that still need to be addressed if
the region is to prepare itself or a proper response to similar
pandemic in the future," said Mr. Kim Hak-Su, UNESCAP Executive
Secretary.
The central publication in the compendium is an
in-depth study of the status and ramifications of the HIV/AIDS
pandemic for the entire UNESCAP region that was prepared for
the 59th Commission Session
Two companion volumes include an action guide
that encourages governments and suggests ways to implement a
multi-ministerial response to the pandemic, and a volume of
stories from the community or case studies of successful government,
private and community intervention to help prevent the spread
of the disease.
Participants in the panel discussion include experts
from UNESCAP, UNAIDS, WHO, and the media on Asia's emerging
health crises - the lessons learnt and the response required
to prevent similar crises in future.
