KNOW YOUR HUMAN RIGHTS
Human Rights Day, 10 December 2003
Bangkok (UN Information Services) - With this
year's theme for Human Rights Day, Dec.10th, focusing on "Know
Your Human Rights", a special 'youth forum' is being organized
to raise awareness about child sexual exploitation and human
rights challenges in the Asia-Pacific region among students.
Professor Vitit Muntarbhorn, Chualalongkorn law
lecturer and prominent Thai social commentator, will be guest
speaker at this year's official United Nations observance of
Human Rights Day on 10th December in Bangkok.
The event, to be held at the United Nations Conference Centre
between 9am and Midday, will also include messages
from the Secretary General of the UN, Mr. Kofi Annan, and
the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
UN field workers will give first-hand account
of their experiences in dealing with Human Rights in the region,
with the emphasis on what young people can do about the issues
in their communities.

Part 2: Youth Forum : What can you do to protect
and promote human rights?
1030 1200 hrs. Presentation by Mr. Eric
Roeder, UNESCAP, on the human rights situation in Poi Pet, Cambodia.
The session will include a video presentation called Poi
Pet at the Gates, followed by discussions on the social
and development challenges facing the Asia-Pacific region.
Presentation by Ms. Amalee McCoy, ECPAT International,
on child sexual exploitation. The presentation will be specifically
targeted towards young students.
There will also be a focus on how young people
can actively get involved in promoting and protecting basic
human rights in their environment.
