HEALTH, POVERTY TO DOMINATE UNESCAP COMMISSION
SESSION
BANGKOK (UN Information Services) --The second
phase of the 59th annual Commission session of the United Nations
Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP)
will be held from 1 to 4 September at the United Nations Conference
Centre in Bangkok.
Health and poverty issues are high on the agenda
in keeping with this year's theme topic : "Integrating
economic and social concerns, especially HIV/AIDS, in meeting
the needs of the region."
Emerging issues and development at the regional
level; namely poverty reduction, managing globalization and
emerging social issues as well as least developed, landlocked
and island developing countries will be other topics for discussion.
Delegates are expected to discuss implications
of recent economic and social development on the region and
recommend policy responses. Special interventions are to be
made by Botswana President H.E. Festus Mogae who will share
Africa's experience of tackling HIV/AIDs issues.
Ministers and senior officials from 62 member
and associate member countries and territories of UNESCAP are
expected to participate the upcoming session.
The session will be inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Korn
Dabbaransi, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand on Monday, 1 September
2003 at 10:00 hours.
Special features for this year's session will
be two ministerial round tables on HIV/AIDS and the Report of
the Millennium Development Goals for Asia and the Pacific.

Monday, 1 September
Inauguration session by H.E. Mr. Korn Dabbaransi, Deputy
Prime Minister of Thailand, at 10:00 hours
Tuesday, 2 September
1) Ministerial Round Table on HIV/AIDS from 9:00-12:00 hours.
The discussion will focus on multi-ministerial responses to
HIV/AIDS in Asia and the Pacific and the role of political leadership
at the highest levels. A keynote address will be delivered to
the Ministerial Round Table by H.E. Mr. Festus Mogae, President
of Botswana, who will be a special guest on the occasion
and a statement by Dr. Nafis Sadik, United Nations Secretary-General's
Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS in Asia.
2) Launch of three inter-related publications
on HIV/AIDS from 12:30-13:45 hours by Mr. Kim-Hak-Su, Executive
Secretary of UNESCAP and H.E. Mr. Miles Kupa, Ambassador of
Australia to Thailand. Light lunch will be served.
Photo opportunities: Several interesting
exhibits will be on display showing the United Nations family
fight against HIV/AIDS and highlighting the Commission's main
themes.
