Summary of upcoming events from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific - UNESCAP

=> 20 September - International Day of Peace - Observance and Roundtable Discussion on "Global Ceasefire and Non-Violence" as well as a special lecture from Mr. Jagdish Gandhi, winner of this year's UNESCO Prize for Peace Education. 9am-12 Noon, UNCC, Bangkok. PHOTO OPS: of student singers and presentation of Peace Poles to the Royal Thai Armed Forces.

=> 11 October - World Habitat Day 2002 - UNESCAP and Community Organizations Development Institute of the Thai Government are co-organizing a commemoration of World Habitat Day at the UNCC in Bangkok. The focus this year is on Cities Without Slums. UNESCAP has identified four best practices for poverty alleviation in Thailand and will be awarding plaques to the project organizers. H.E. the Prime Minister of Thailand has been invited to the Commemoration. UNCC, Bangkok. 09:30-12:30

=> 14-25 October - United Nations Poster Exhibition - "For a Better World" - A retrospective of UN posters from 1945 to present. UNCC, Bangkok. The posters, designed by famous artists, are available for reproduction for art editors.

=> 23 October - Round Table Seminar and launch of publication "Rejuvenating Bank Finance in Asia and Pacific," a major investigation into current lending practices of Asian banks and the creditworthiness of Asian corporations.

=> 24 October - United Nations Day - Official observance of UN Day. UNESCAP Executive Secretary Mr. Kim Hak-Su and H.E. the Prime Minister of Thailand (tentative) among those in attendance. Also a publicity walk will be held from the UN Building to Suan Amphorn promoting the Thai Government's Sports Campaign.

=> 25-28 October - High-Level Intergovernmental Meeting to Conclude the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons, 1993-2002. Location: Otsu, Japan. An advanced briefing on the meeting will be held in Bangkok, date TBA.

=> 4 December - Round Table Seminar and launch of publication on Protecting Marginalized Groups During Economic Downturns: Lessons from the Asian Experience. UNCC, Bangkok

=> 11-17 December - Fifth Asian and Pacific Population Conference. Location: UNCC, Bangkok With the theme "Population and Poverty in Asia and the Pacific," this meeting, held only once every ten years, will examine in-depth how changing demographics are affecting the region and what action is needed to head off problems created by a rapidly ageing population.

=> 19-20 December - Launch of Bulletin on Asia-Pacific Perspectives 2002/03. The latest and most up-to-date report on developments affecting the global and regional economies. UNCC, Bangkok
