UNESCAP highlights outcome of the Johannesburg 2002 Bangkok (United Nations Information Services) - The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) is organizing a briefing for Bangkok university students on the outcome of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) or Johannesburg 2002. Leaders from more than 100 countries approved a wide-range of recommendations at the summit in Johannesburg, South Africa on ways to tackle the growing problem of unsustainable development. Approximately 150 students from various universities in Bangkok will attend the briefing, designed to explain both the outcome of the Johannesburg Summit and to increase the students' awareness and general knowledge of issues relating to the environment and sustainable development. The programme takes place at Conference Room 3, United Nations Conference Centre, on Monday, 16 September 2002 from 09:00 to 12:00 hrs. The briefing will be divided into four sessions: introduction to Johannesburg 2002 and the outcome of the Summit; a panel discussion on United Nations activities relating to the environment and sustainable development; the role of the media in promoting environmentally, sustainable development; and creating a motivation for young people in order to help protect the environment. The speakers include representatives from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Ms. Veerawan Vararuth, Deputy Director of Thai News Agency, Mass Communications Organization of Thailand (MCOT), Mr. Wasant Techawongtham, News Editor of Bangkok Post and President, Thai Society of Environmental Journalists; Mr. Viroj Prakobphibul, Head of Social News, TV 9, MCOT, Mr. Kitti Singhapad of ITV and Ms. Ornuma Kasetpuchphol and her environment youth envoy team.
