WTO/UNESCAP/ASEAN holds Seminar on Facilitating Trade Bangkok (United Nations Information Services) -- The World Trade Organization (WTO), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) are organizing the WTO/ESCAP/ASEAN Regional Seminar on Facilitating Trade through Implementation of the WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Agreement in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, from 29 to 31 October 2002. The Seminar is part of the capacity-building programme of the three organizations to assist developing countries to participate more effectively in the WTO. The seminar is aimed at senior government officials from the 10 ASEAN Member States and China whose responsibilities directly involve trade policy, in particular WTO agreements related to standards and quality, as well as officials involved in the development of standards, quality control and quality conformity assessments. The Seminar will consider the role of technical standards and how WTO principles and rules on these standards facilitate trade. The Seminar will also consider regional harmonization programmes and their interface with international programmes. Representatives from UNESCAP, WTO, ASEAN, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) will make presentations on relevant topics.
