I. Senior Official Segment:

Thursday, 16 May 2002

09:00 - 10:00 hrs.

Opening of the Senior Officials' Segment of the Commission Session by
Mr. Kim Hak-Su, Executive Secretary of ESCAP. (ESCAP Hall)

10:00 - 17:00 hrs.

Three Committees of the Whole meet throughout the day. They are:

Committee of the Whole I on Management issues and Programme Planning, Committee of the Whole II on Regional Economic Cooperation, Statistics, Transport, Communications, Tourism and Infrastructure Development; Committee of the Whole III on Environment and Natural Resources Development, Socio-economic Measures to Alleviate Poverty in Rural and Urban Areas and Least Developed, Landlocked and Island Developing Countries.

Friday, 17 May 2002

09:00 - 12:00 hrs.

Informal consultations on Least developed and land-locked developing countries
and on economies in transition.

11:00 - 17:00 hrs.

The three Committees of the Whole continue to meet all day.


II. Ministerial Segment (20-22 May 2002):

Monday, 20 May 2002

09:00- 10:30 hrs.

Opening session of the Ministerial Segment of ESCAP's 58th Commission session
by H.E. Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra, Prime Minister of the Royal Thai Government.

Approx 09:30 hrs.

H.E. the Prime Minister opens the exhibition "Dangerous Liaisons: HIV/AIDS,
drugs and human trafficking in a globalizing world".

10:00 - 17:00 hrs.

Policy issues for the ESCAP region to be addressed by Ministers from the ESCAP region on:

(a) Implications of recent economic and social development;
(b) Sustainable social development in a period of rapid globalization: challenges, opportunities and policy option;
(c) Regional preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

17:00 - 17:30 hrs.

ESCAP Hall: 2001 ESCAP Human Resources Development Award -- "Empowering the Rural Poor through HRD" will be presented by ESCAP's Executive Secretary Kim Hak-Su to the winner -- The Participatory Development Training Center, based in Vientiane, Lao People's Democratic Republic.

Tuesday, 21 May 2002

09:00 - 12:00 hrs.

Ministerial Roundtable on the ESCAP Reform (closed meeting).

12:00 -- 12:30 hrs.

Press Conference by Mr. Kim Hak-Su, Executive Secretary of ESCAP on the outcome
of the Ministerial Roundtable at the Executive Suite, 2nd Fl., UNCC

14:00 - 17:00 hrs.

Policy issues delivered all day.

Wednesday, 22 May 2002

14:00 - 17:00 hrs.

Adoption of the Report of the Commission.
