UNESCAP to Release New Economic Data During "Unusually uncertain time in global and regional development" Bangkok (United Nations Information Services) -- Amidst the current uncertain times, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific - UNESCAP - will release its latest and most up-to-date assessment of the region's economic and social state of affairs. The annual Bulletin on Asia-Pacific Perspectives, 2002/03 will be released to the media by UNESCAP Executive Secretary Mr Kim Hak-Su at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, Thursday, 19 December 2002 at 10.30 a.m.. With the theme: Asia-Pacific Economies: Sustaining Growth Amidst Uncertainties, the Bulletin will focus on recent developments in the regional and global economy and the impact they are currently having on the people of the Asian and the Pacific region. The UNESCAP region is home to more than 62% of the world's population, or roughly 3.8 billion people - and two-thirds of the world's poorest inhabitants. Stressing that this is "an unusually uncertain time in global and regional development," the Bulletin will address the current dynamics of global and regional interdependence. UNESCAP experts and a group of "Eminent Persons" from countries across the region have contributed to this publication. In addition to its main theme, the 110 page Bulletin on Asia-Pacific Perspectives, 2002/03 covers various issues including "Social Protection in the 'new' Economy," "Unemployment in the Wake of the Asian Economic Crisis," "Good Governance," "Promoting SME Development," "Empowering Women through Micro-Credit Programmes," "Competition Policy in Developing Countries," "Financial Cooperation in East Asia," and "Export Diversification in Pacific Island Countries." NOTE TO EDITORS: You or your representatives are cordially invited to attend the launch of the Bulletin on Asia-Pacific Perspectives, 2002/03 on Thursday, 19 December 2002, at the United Nations Conference Centre, at 10:30 AM. The authors will be on hand to discuss their findings and explain the impact those findings may have on the people of the Asian and Pacific region.
