What is the ODS?

The ODS stores electronic versions of official UN documentation in portable document format (pdf) and/or text format. A web browser, such as Internet Explorer, and Adobe Acrobat Reader are required to access the system and view the pdf files. Documents are uploaded at duty stations worldwide, including ESCAP.   Indexing data is provided by the Dag Hammarskjöld Library.

Comprehensive, though not complete, coverage of all types of official UN documentation begins in 1993. These files are contained in the UN Documents database. Digitization of earlier documentation is ongoing. Currently, the ODS contains close to 800,000 files, and approximately 100,000 new documents are added each year.

The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) at UNHQ in New York, is pleased to announce the implementation of Google search on the Official Document System (ODS) effective 15 April 2005. This option will only be available on the public ODS site located at http://documents.un.org. This option will be called ”Global Search” and it will be in addition to the “Simple” and “Advanced” search options currently available on ODS. Please note that, as this new search option uses a different search engine from the one used by ODS internally, search results may be slightly different from those obtained by using the search options available on the current ODS. You can access the “Global Search” option through http://documents.un.org or through specific language access points as follows:
