The target group comprises national, provincial and local government agencies responsible for disaster management. The workshop will (i) identify major technology and capacity gaps in space applications, including relevant geo-information technology in Pakistan to enhance institutional capacity for better risk management of water-related disasters; (ii) share information in water resources management for more effective management of flash floods and reservoir operations; and (iii) identify related climate change impacts which are expected to worsen floods and droughts as well as preparatory needs for flood risk management.

Following up on the 1st HLS ESC held in March 2010, in Jakarta Indonesia, the objectives of the 2nd HLS ESC include: (i) providing a broad platform for fostering partnership on ESC development in the region among all stakeholders (national and local governments, bilateral and international development agencies, city networks, private sector, NGOs, academia and community groups), (ii) facilitating the transfer of good practices and policies for ESC from city to city through sharing and exchanging relevant information, and supporting programmes and training opportunities provided by development partners, and (iii) sharing information on successful public-private partnership projects for replication.

UN to Mark World Water Day in Bangkok
ESCAP and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) will commemorate World Water Day on 22 March at the UN Conference Centre (UNCC) in Bangkok. The theme of the 2011 World Water Day is “Water for Cities - Responding the Urban Challenge”, focusing on the impact of rapid urbanization on water resources management and equitable access to water and sanitation services. Cities around the Asia-Pacific region are responding to the growing demand for water by overexploiting available resources. With large sections of the region’s urban population living in low-quality housing, including slums and squatter settlements, providing adequate water and sanitation facilities is a huge challenge. The urban poor are estimated paying up to 50 times more for a litre of water than the relatively affluent. This year’s World Water Day celebration will begin with an exhibition at the UNCC and continue with a field trip to the Bang Bua Community on the outskirts of Bangkok, to explore an inspiring community-driven and holistic upgrading process focused on water and sanitation, and the environment.
