Study on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security to be Released
Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security has been selected as the theme topic for this year’s Commission session by ESCAP member governments, and the Study will be launched publicly during the Commission session. The theme study examines the problem of food insecurity and unsustainable agriculture in the Asian and Pacific region. The recent food crisis has spotlighted the serious state of food insecurity in the region with an estimated increase from 542 to 582 million of undernourished people. The number of underweight children in the region is even more alarming: more than half of the world’s underweight children - nearly 80 million - live in South and South-West Asia alone. The study provides an agenda for governments and the international community to revitalize agriculture and achieve greater food security in a more sustainable manner. The measures proposed cover the areas of sustainable agriculture, trade, social protection and regional cooperation.

Special Body to Focus on Least Developed and Landlocked Developing Countries
The Special Body on Least Developed and Landlocked Developing Countries (LDCs and LLDCs) will be integrated into the Commission session of ESCAP for the first time this year, taking place on 24 April during the senior officials’ segment. A distinguishing feature of this year’s special body will be the “High-Level Exchange on Food-Fuel-Financial Crisis and Climate Change: Addressing Threats to Development”. In addition, the special body will discuss regional cooperation for shared prosperity and social progress, and a summary of progress in the implementation of resolutions relating to countries with special needs. The special body session will also highlight gaps and the need to strengthen institutional capacities in achieving the Millennium Development Goals in countries with special needs. Fourteen out of 50 LDCs in the world are in Asia and the Pacific - the largest number after Africa. The region also accounts for 12 out of 31 LLDCs worldwide, some of them are also LDCs.
