Status: 16/12/2009. Quick navigation: by theme/sector or country/subregion (East Asia | South-East Asia | South and South-West Asia | North and Central Asia | Pacific islands | Other developed ESCAP members).
Background: The objective of the Statistical Abstract of Transport in Asia and the Pacific is to facilitate exchange of transport-related data in the UNESCAP region. It consists of tables containing data for 1980-2009 and which are organized alternatively by theme/sector or country/subregion. An analysis of these data is published once every two years in the from of the publication Review of developments in transport in Asia and the Pacific. The long-term goal of the Statistical Abstract is to allow to report on trends in time and across countries in terms of transport productivity as well as environmental and social performance of the various modes and the transport sector as a whole in the region.
The current version of the Statistical Abstract includes (where available) 120 transport-related national-level indicators for the 62 ESCAP members and associate members of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacifc. In contrast to the previous 2005 version of the Statistical Abstract, the new version below almost exclusively contains data from official government sources.
Data definitions: Data providers were encouraged to follow the definitions contained in the UNECE Glossary for Transport Statistics, 3rd edition (PDF). However, these were followed only to limited extent and particular caution need to be exercised when comparing transport data across jurisdictions.
More specific country data and information can be found in ESCAP publications (Review of developments | Transport and Communications Bulletin), country reports (infrastructure and public-private partnerships | road safety), and route-specific data (Asian Highway | Trans-Asian Railway).
