Tourism and Poverty Alleviation

The eradication of extreme poverty and hunger tops the list of the Millennium Development Goals. With its huge potential to offer labour intensive jobs and small-scale business opportunities particularly to women and unskilled youth, tourism offers the Asia-Pacific region an effective tool to achieve this goal.

ESCAP has been undertaking a number of activities aimed at strengthening the capability of Government Tourism Agencies to develop overall policy initiatives, and measure the impact on public and private sector initiatives aimed at poverty alleviation. Further information is provided under the sections on major activities and publications.
For further information, please feel free to contact us at escap-ttd@un.org or write to our project officers who stand ready to assist you.
