Trans-Asian Railway Partners and Links

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the International Union of Railways (UIC) in June 2000.

The International Union of Railways has 171 members from all five continents breaking down in 74 active members, 59 associate members and 38 affiliate members. Members include integrated railway companies, infrastructure managers, railway research institutes as well as other entities involved in railway business. Among ESCAP member countries, Chinese Railways, East Japan Railway Company, Indian Railways, Kazakhstan Railways, Korean National Railroad and Pakistan Railways are active members. Azerbaijan Railways, Bangladesh Railways, the Royal Railways of Cambodia, Central Japan Railway Company, Georgian Railway, Japan Freight Railway Company Kyusshu Railway Company, Philippines Railways, Qheensland Railways of New Zealand, Turkmenistan Railways and West Japan Railway Company are associate members. The railways of Belarus and Poland which signed the MOU on the Planing and Implementation of Demonstration Runs of Container Block-trains along the Trans-Asian Railway Northern Corridor (link to page “Development of Asia-Europe Rail Container Transport through Block-trains – Trans-Asian Railway Northern Corridor”), are also active members of UIC.

As part of its action plan for international railway cooperation, UIC carries out and coordinates a wide range of projects, covering technical harmonisation and interoperability, the development of international passenger and freight traffic, safety, infrastructure management, research, IT systems, human resources, and other related issues. Two long-standing areas of activity for UIC is the promotion of railway as an environmentally sustainable mode of transport, especially with regard to greenhouse gas emissions, and the promotion of pan-European railway corridors.
