Trans-Asian Railway North-South Corridor

In the mid-1990s, investment in infrastructure development by a number of railway organizations as well as initiatives by governments to boost transit by rail through their countries generate renewed interest in the feasibility of rail container transport as a possible alternative to shipping between Northern Europe and the Persian Gulf with shipping connections to South and South-East Asia.

In 2001, UNESCAP conducts a study to identify a basic network of rail routes as well as land-cum-sea routes through the Caucasus region, Central Asia and/or the Caspian Sea. The countries involved are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Finland, Georgia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The study :

   - identifies the routes,
   - specifies minimum technical standards and requirements,
   - provides a limited appraisal of the transit times that the identified
     routes can offer,
   - assesses the presence of operational restrictions which might impede
the smooth flow of goods along the routes.

The study report is published under the title Development of the Trans-Asian Railway: Trans-Asian Railway in the North-South Corridor Northern Europe to the Persian Gulf (ST/ESCAP/2182, 2001).

In September 2005, a meeting of senior officials of the concerned railway organizations meets in Moscow to review recent developments in the corridor. They reaffirm the great potential of the corridor and request UNESCAP to assist in the promotion of its future development (Meeting report).
