Trans-Asian
Railway North-South Corridor
In the mid-1990s, investment in infrastructure
development by a number of railway organizations as well
as initiatives by governments to boost transit by rail through
their countries generate renewed interest in the feasibility
of rail container transport as a possible alternative to
shipping between Northern Europe and the Persian Gulf with
shipping connections to South and South-East Asia.
In 2001, UNESCAP conducts a study to identify a basic network
of rail routes as well as land-cum-sea routes through the
Caucasus region, Central Asia and/or the Caspian Sea. The
countries involved are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Finland, Georgia,
the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation,
Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The study :
