With the generous support of the Government
of Japan, a study on the Trans-Asian Railway network development
and route requirements in selected ASEAN and Greater Mekong
Area countries was conducted in 1996.
For the purpose of the study, the ASEAN countries
include Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand (south of
Bangkok) while the Greater Mekong Area includes Cambodia, southern
China (Yunnan province), Myanmar, Lao, Thailand (north and east
of Bangkok) and Viet Nam. The objectives of the study were to
(ii) evaluate the potential market for the railways concerned,
(iii) evaluate service and tariffs requirements,
(iv) specify minimum technical standards and requirements,
(v) review the operational status of the routes,
(vi) assess and cost the development needs of TAR in the subregion,
(vii) study the question of facilitation for cross-border transport
on the TAR network identified.
The findings and recommendations of the study
were considered by the representatives of all the countries
concerned during a Policy-level Expert Group Meeting held in
Bangkok in February 1996.
