Trans-Asian Railway
in Indo-China and Asean subregion
|
In 1995, UNESCAP undertakes a second corridor study aimed
at defining the routes of the Trans-Asian Railway and their
technical requirements in selected countries of ASEAN and
the Greater Mekong Area. The countries involved in the study
are Cambodia, China (Yunnan province), Indonesia, Lao PDR,
Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. The
objectives of the study are to:
|
| -
identify the routes, |
| -
evaluate the potential market for the railways concerned, |
| -
evaluate service and tariffs requirements, |
| -
specify minimum technical standards and requirements, |
| -
review the operational status of the routes, |
| -
assess and cost the development needs of TAR in the
subregion, and |
-
study the question of facilitation for cross-border
transport on the TAR
network identified. |
The findings and recommendations of
the study are considered by the representatives of all the
countries concerned at a Policy-level Expert Group Meeting
(Bangkok, February 1996). In late 1995, the Government of
Malaysia decides that the study provides a good basis for
the Singapore-Kunming Rail Link project.
The study is published in three volumes
under the title
“Trans-Asian Railway Route Requirements:
Development of the Trans-Asian Railway in the Indo-China
and ASEAN Subregion” (ST/ESCAP/1679, New York, 1996)
