Regional Expert Group Meeting on Implementation of Decade of Action
for Road Safety, 2011-2020

The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution on Improving global road safety on 2 March 2010 which proclaimed the period 2011-2020 as the Decade of Action for Road Safety with a goal to stabilize and then reduce the forecast level of road traffic, fatalities around the world by increasing activities conducted at the national, regional and global levels.

Acknowledging the importance of the Decade of Action, the United Nations ESCAP is implementing a project to assist member countries in developing and implementing their national road safety strategy, action plan, goals and targets by 2020.
 

In this background, ESCAP is organizing an Expert Group Meeting with the objective to:

  • update participants on the global and regional road safety initiatives including the Decade of Action for Road Safety, 2011-2020;
  • discuss and extend the regional road safety goals, targets and indicators covering the period 2011-2020 in line with General Assembly resolution 64/255;
  • share global and regional experiences and lessons in improving national road safety strategies; and
  • discuss data mechanisms for monitoring progress on achieving implementation of regional road safety goals and targets.
