- WTO/ESCAP Third ARTNeT Capacity Building Workshop on Trade Research, 26-30 March 2007
- Second ARTNeT Visiting Fellowship awarded to Mr. Bounlert Vanhnalat, National University of Lao, in cooperation with the University of Hong Kong
Mr. Bounlert Vanhnalat, Lecturer, National University of Laos, was awarded an ARTNeT fellowship to conduct research on the factors that affect Lao PDR's trade competititiveness and its exports to neighboring countries. He worked under the guidance of Mr. Donald J. Lewis, Associate Professor and Director, East Asian International Economic Law and Policy Programme, University of Hong Kong. Mr. Vanhnalat was generously hosted at the University of Hong Kong from 29 October to 26 December 2007, which also allowed him to participate in the Third ARTNeT Consultative Meeting and related events held in Macao, China during the last week of October.

Following the workshop, support was provided to interested participants to apply the methods learned during the workshop. Prabir De and Samir Ranjan Pradhan used gravity models to examine the impact of trade costs on trade and the export development potential of an FTA between India and the Gulf Cooperation, respectively. Indira Hapsari also estimated a gravity model to understand the determinants of AFTA Members trade patterns.

- First ARTNeT Visiting Fellowship awarded to Mr. Rajan, Panta, Tribhuvan University, Nepal
Mr. Rajan Panta, a junior team member of an ARTNeT team
led by Dr. Maskay (Tribhuvan University) and conducting
a study on Investment
Liberalization Strategies in the Service Sector will
be hosted at the Thailand Development Research Institute
(TDRI) and UNESCAP Trade and Investment Division from 17
February 2006 to 25 April 2006. Dr. Deunden Nikomborirak,
TDRI, has kindly agreed to advise Mr. Panta as he conducts
a follow-up case study of liberalization of the health services
sector in Thailand.
