Strengthening the ‘evidence’ for evidence-based policy making

Coordinating the development of population and social statistics across the ESCAP region

Recognizing the growing emphases being placed on the importance of evidence-based policy, the ESCAP Committee on Statistics supported the strategic goal of ensuring that all countries in the region have the capability by 2020 to provide an agreed basic range of population, economic, social and environment statistics.

To achieve this goal, the Committee decided to establish a Technical Advisory Group on Population and Social Statistics (TAG-PSS) to provide recommendations as well as substantive and methodological guidelines regarding the development of an agreed basic range of population and social statistics.

In 2012, at its third session, the Committee endorsed the Core set of Population and Social Statistics, to serve as a regional guideline for national statistical capacity development.
