Pilot Study on Applying CD - ROM for Census and Survey Data
By: Neramit  Dhanasakdi
National Statistical Office, Thailand
Introduction

National Statistical Office is responsible for conducting the national censuses and surveys. All of the statistical information form our censuses and surveys as well as statistical information from other agencies are available at the central office in Bangkok.

At present most of the information are still in the publication form which is not convenience to use. The new modern technology are the introduce such as:

  1. The data base that contain the information on census and survey project conduct by NSO.
  2. The statistical Information Searching System.
  3. The publication in the floppy disk form.
  4. The sample data in the floppy disk and the computer tape form.

There are still problems on using the floppy disk and the computer tape since they have their age. We have to keep testing the data tape and the floppy disk and back up. To test quite a lot of tape from many surveys and censuss take a lot of time, it is costly for both  the computer time and continue replaceing with the new tape and floppy disk.

The data base has some disavantage, as many of our surveys are continuing survey, which means that recent data will be added on the data base. The data base become   too large, and if we replace the recent data over the previous one, we seem to loose the previous data.

With these problems we are thinking of using CD-ROM in keeping the data rather than the tape or the floppy disk, for the census by

  1. The raw data of short form and the long form questionnaires along with the sample data will be recorded in the CD-ROM
  2. The detail information in the table form that used to be in the print out form in the last census will be kept in CD-ROM in the form of either the table form that can be retrieved by using the index search, or either by the data base form.

We do not have experience in CD-ROM. We hope that if Thailand will be one of the pilot country we would rather imply the technology in the use of CD-ROM for recording the census and surveys information.
