Expert Group Meeting on ESCAP Regional Census Programme
Bangkok, 27-28 November 2006
Last update: 31 January 2007
Background

While the 2010 World Programme on Population and Housing Censuses will have a global breadth, it is noted that regional recommendations are an invaluable input into the international version, as each region will have their own concerns distinct from other regions. In support of this initiative, ESCAP sought the advice of an Expert Group to identify the focus and major components of the ESCAP Regional Census Programme – the 2010 round. A major goal of the ESCAP Regional Census Programme is to ensure that all countries in the Asia and Pacific region use accepted international principles and recommendations for international comparability when conducting the next round of censuses. In addition, through the Programme, countries will be able to share their best practices and the Programme will also facilitate cooperation among countries in the region in census operations.

The second half of the Expert Group Meeting focused on the measurement, dissemination, data sharing and collaboration strategies among countries on international migration statistics. The meeting will seek the guidance of the Expert Group on how best to collect and disseminate internationally comparable migration statistics. Over the past decade, the cross-border movement of people within the Asia and Pacific region has risen rapidly and globalization has increased migration for the purpose of seeking job opportunities. In this context, availability of internationally comparable migration data comes to the forefront as an issue with strong policy relevance and measurement concern.
