Workshop on Concepts & Methods for Producing Disaggregated Statistics Using Census Data

Bangkok, 20-23 September 2011
Last update: 23 September 2011
Governments of developing countries and the international development community have made great strides during the last decade in improving data collection and the development of tools needed for the production of disaggregated statistics in support of achieving the MDGs in the region. These efforts, however, have yet to translate into sustained capacity of national statistical systems of many countries in the region to produce MDG-related disaggregated statistics.

As part of the ESCAP/ADB/UNDP regional programme on “Supporting the Achievement of the MDGs in Asia and the Pacific”, ESCAP is supporting a selected number of countries in strengthening the capacity of their national statistical systems to — (a) tabulate MDG-related disaggregated statistics and indicators from population and housing census data; (b) apply small-area estimation techniques for producing MDG-related indicators at disaggregated levels; and (c) prepare a master sampling frame, or master sample, for household surveys.

This 4-day workshop brought together experts from potential project partner countries and provided a forum where participants were:

  • To explore the concepts and statistical methods relating to small area estimation and master sample methodologies that the project proposes to develop and apply;
  • To discuss challenges, such as data availability and methodological gaps, and identify potential solutions that the project could test; and
  • To review and finalise country proposals based on the workshop discussions and conclusions.
