Introduction

The Committee on Statistics of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has designated environment statistics as one of the five priority topics during years 2000-2001.

Moreover, countries expressed the need for capacity building activities on environment statistics and environmental accounting in both monetary and physical terms and requested ESCAP to play an active coordinating role in improving environment statistics in the region in the last two sessions of ESCAP Commission.

Following on from previous activities on environment statistics and environmental accounting, the Statistics Division of ESCAP has a Netherlands-funded capacity-building project entitled "Development of Environment Statistics in the ESCAP region".

Project on Development of Environment Statistics

The project entitled "Development of Environment Statistics in ESCAP region" funded by the Government of Netherlands is executed by the Statistics Division of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

The broad aim of the project is to improve national capabilities of developing countries in the region for identifying, collecting, processing, analysing and utilizing the data needed for formulating policies and programmes for environment and sustainable development, as well as for monitoring and evaluating the progress made.

The basic objectives of the project are to adopt a set of training materials on environment statistics and to provide the concerned officials with the available basic standard international methodological issues of environment statistics through subregional training workshops for East and South-East Asia, South Asia, the Pacific islands and Central Asia during the years 2000-2001.

Under the current project, four subregional training workshops on environment statistics are being  organized from May 2000 to October 2001.
