Subregional Training Workshops on Environment Statistics in the ESCAP region, 2000-2001
Last update: 10 May 2002

The ESCAP Statistics Division organized four subregional training workshops on environment statistics for government officials in environment statistics in East and South-East Asia, South Asia, the Pacific islands and the Central Asia.

  • First Subregional Training Workshop on Environment Statistics, Bangkok, 8-19 May 2001 (East and South-East Asia)
  • Second Subregional Training Workshop on Environment Statistics, Hyderabad, 2-14 April 2001 (South Asia).
  • Third Subregional Training Workshop on Environment Statistics, Port Vila, 30 April -11 May 2001 (the Pacific islands).
  • Fourth Subregional Training Workshop on Environment Statistics, Bangkok, 1-12 October 2001 (Central Asia/ECO countries).

The programme of subregional workshops consists of five modules: a general introduction to environment statistics and its relation to indicators and accounting; emissions and environmental quality including air, water, and waste; agri-environmental statistics including land use, land cover, biodiversity and soil degradation and environmental and economic accounting in both monetary and physical terms and practical and tactical maters.

Objectives of the subregional training workshops
  1. To train middle and senior level officials who are or will be directly involved in environment statistics or a closely related field, both from the national statistical agency and from the nodal department/agency dealing with environmental concerns, by exposing them to recent developments and methodological issues in the fields of environment statistics, indicators and accounting including definitions, classifications, survey and estimation methodologies, and data sources.
  2. To organize a one day, three-session panel discussion covering achievements and shortcomings in the improvement of environment statistics at national/international levels, the institutional structure of environment statistics at these levels, and further progress in supply and use of environment statistics. The panel discussion is intended to review the progress made in the countries/areas of the region in the field of environment statistics and to share their experiences of issues encountered and strategies adopted to overcome some of the obstacles faced.
  3. To provide all available soft copy documents on CD-ROMs for participants.
  4. To create a web page for environment statistics under the web page of the Statistics Division of ESCAP.
