Annotated Provisional Agenda

1. Opening of the meeting

Suitable arrangements will be made in due course. The Bureau of the ninth session of the Committee on Statistics will preside at the Working Group in the same capacities.

3. Report of the Bureau

The Bureau will give a summary report of its first meeting on 29 January 1996.

4. Review of implementation arrangements for the 1993 System of National Accounts (SNA)

As requested by the United Nations Statistical Commission, the secretariat has been collecting information from countries on their implementation plans as well as staff strength in national accounts units, needs for technical assistance etc. The secretariat has also formulated a series of project proposals for extrabudgetary funding to assist countries in their implementation efforts. A secretariat note will document these developments.

5. Statistics on trade in services

The Working Group will discuss the topic on the basis of the report of the Seminar on Statistics on Trade in Services, held at Bangkok from 6 to 10 November 1995.

6. Use of information technology in statistics

    1. Geographic information systems
    2. Remote sensing in statistics
    3. Implications of the Internet

Participants will be asked to provide a short report on the status of information technology use in statistics in their countries. Documentation will also include up to six short papers on one of the agenda sub-items, prepared by selected countries with particular experience and expertise in those fields.

7. Programmes of national statistical offices towards the effective dissemination of statistical information

The secretariat will prepare a short paper drawing on the Seminar on Managing National Statistical Services in the 1990s Data Dissemination with focus on Monitoring Human Development (1993).

8. Statistical coordination within countries

The secretariat's note on this item will be drawn largely from information presented by ESCAP at the South Pacific Commission's Regional Conference of Statisticians, held in September 1995.

9. Programme matters

(a) Review of the work programme in statistics, 1996-1997

The work programme for 1996-1997 has been reviewed by the Committee on Statistics in 1994 and endorsed by the ESCAP Commission in 1995; the secretariat note will therefore focus on programme changes.

(b) Review of the outline of the medium-term plan in statistics, 1998-2001

The secretariat will present a short note including the text of the medium-term plan in statistics which will be reviewed by the ESCAP Commission in 1996.

10. Provisional agenda for the tenth session of the Committee on Statistics

The Bureau will report on any amendments to the tentative provisional agenda drawn up by the ninth session of the Committee.
