Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day

Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements, regardless of divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. 2011 is the global centenary year for International Women’s Day – 100 years since International Women's Day was marked for the first time. Each year organizations, governments and women's groups around the world choose different themes for International Women’s Day that reflects global and local gender issues. The United Nations theme for year 2011 is “Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women.”

It is against this background that a United Nations Regional Coordination Mechanism Thematic Working Group on Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women event is being convened on 8 March 2011. The highlight of the event was a session on, “Voices of Young Women: Envisioning the Future”, featuring young women from different sectors of society presenting their thoughts and aspirations related to this year’s theme. Accompanying the event, there was an interactive exhibit by UN Agencies, NGOs, Academic institutions and the private sector.
