What is the potential of organic agriculture for rural poverty alleviation? A regional workshop discussed the findings of one regional and seven country studies. A publication provides comprehensive information on the organic sector and rural poverty alleviation in Asia.

Bangkok Declaration on Microfinance
The Conference on Microfinance Policy and Governance was held in Bangkok from 6 to 8 March 2002 to build knowledge, institutional capacity, and public-private sector cooperation in enhancing the effectiveness of microfinance as an instrument of poverty alleviation in the Asia-Pacific Region. The conference adopted the Bangkok Declaration on Microfinance

Small enterprise success case replication  
ESCAP has developed a manual for the replication process. It works in two main steps: to locate farmers or groups who have achieved good success in their enterprises, and to mobilize the successful farmer or groups to train their less well-off fellow villagers. It differs from conventional enterprise training because it mobilizes successful farmers or groups to train rural poor themselves. It does not depend upon professional or government trainers to conduct the training.

Promotion of government-NGO collaboration rural poverty alleviation
In order to fully understand the extent of government-NGO collaboration for poverty alleviation and to explore ways to further strengthen cooperation between stakeholder groups for poverty alleviation, the situation in six developing countries in Asia was studied. The findings provide an overview on the nature and degree of GO-NGO collaboration, and include recommendations for a further strengthening of the partnerships.

Promotion of a green food and sustainable agriculture network
ESCAP has assisted in the establishment of the"Asia-Pacific Organic Farming and Green Food Information Network" . The network's objective is to address the integration of environmental and health concerns with food security issues, and to provide room for regional exchanges on the subject.(PDF file, 55 Kb)
