The Rural Development Section (RDS) of ESCAP strives to strengthen national capacity in the development of policies and programmes on rural poverty alleviation and sustainable agricultural development. 

This task will be accomplished through:

• the identification and analysis of critical economic and social issues in the reduction of poverty 
  
• awareness raising and information exchange among policy-makers, civil society and academic institutions 
  
• monitoring and analysis of development trends 
  
• training of policy-makers and planners 
  
• publications 
  
• the provision of technical assistance.
