This note reviews the role of trade as a non-financial means of implementing sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific. This is considered in the context of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda and the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

In a major expansion of the Monterrey agenda, the AAAA stresses the importance of science, technology and innovation (STI) for economic growth and sustainable development. The AAAA notes with concern the uneven innovative capacity, connectivity and access to technology within and between countries. Commitments contained in Action Area II.G of the Agenda aim to address these inequities, incentivize research and innovation for sustainable development and promote greater access to technologies through domestic policy and international cooperation.

The United Nations recognizes that productivity capacity-building is key for self-sustained growth and graduation of least developed countries (LDCs) in Asia and the Pacific. To achieve this objective, substantial financing must be mobilized to invest in infrastructure, social development and climate change challenges.
