This abstract gives an overview of the ESCAP Asia-Pacific Transport Database which contains statistical transport data for Asia and the Pacific from 1990 to 2001. The database brings together information from a wide variety of sources including ESCAP member countries, other United Nations organizations and country statistical yearbooks.
The terms multimodal transport and intermodal transport has been used interchangeably to refer to the transport of goods by at least two modes of transport. In a more precise sense, the term “multimodal transport” refers to a scenario where goods move through at least two modes of transport under a single transport contract. The publication discusses how inland water transport (IWT) can be integrated into the multimodal transport system in Asia.
As a follow-up to the signing of the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Asian Highway Network, UNESCAP is implementing a project to identify investment requirement and priorities for the development of the Asian Highway network. Under the project a series of subregional expert group meetings are planned.
