In the present document, the secretariat: (a) reviews experiences related to the
provision of water, sanitation, housing, energy and transport services for inclusive and
sustainable development; (b) highlights important achievements, including the progress
towards the Millennium Development Goals and the shift in development approaches by
several countries in the region towards green growth for more sustainable development; (c)
notes the difficulties in providing these services to everyone in an environmentally
The document describes the progress made in the implementation of the
programme of work for the biennium 2008-2009 in respect of subprogramme 6, Environment
and sustainable development.
The document also gives highlights of the programme of work for 2010-2011,
which was endorsed by the Commission at its sixty-fifth session and will be considered by the
General Assembly at its sixty-fourth session.
The preliminary elements of the draft strategic framework for 2012-2013 in respect of
subprogramme 4, Environment and development, are submitted to the Committee for its
review, pending issuance of global instructions from United Nations Headquarters for the
preparation of the strategic framework for 2012-2013. The Committee may wish to provide its
comments on the document, in particular on the overall direction, expected accomplishments,
indicators of achievement and the strategy
Sustainable management of groundwater is feasible
only if users understand its occurrence, cycle, and limited availability. In order to achieve this, the project
has adopted an approach aimed at demystifying the science of groundwater by translating the scientific
concepts of hydrogeology and groundwater management and making them accessible to groundwater
users who often have limited literacy skills. The education is participatory and emphasizes non-formal
modes of learning.
