A nexus approach, seeks to integrate planning and management processes of the key sectors of energy, water and food, to support the long-term sustainable development of rapidly growing cities. The importance of an integrated approach to natural resource management was recognized both in the Rio+20 outcomes as well as in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The relevance of an urban nexus approach was also highlighted in the Jakarta Call for Action, adopted at the sixth Asia-Pacific Urban Forum (APUF-6) in October 2015.
Urban nexus can act as a sustainable approach to close the resource gaps and for the achievement of multiple goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through coherent policies and for the implementation of the New Urban Agenda.
