This is the meeting report of the First Meeting of the Expert Group on Disaster-related Statistics in Asia and the Pacific, organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan from 27 to 29 October 2014.
India has made notable progress in achieving poverty reduction and other Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) since their adoption at the turn of the century but this progress has been uneven and millions continue to remain trapped in extreme poverty. As the MDGs reach their deadline, and world leaders prepare to adopt new Sustainable Development Goals at the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, it is an opportune moment to make an assessment of India’s achievement of MDGs and lessons learned for the future.
The Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting on the Implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action to be held at the Empress Angkor Hotel, Siem Reap, Cambodia from 4 to 6 March 2015. The Meeting will be inaugurated at 09:00 hours on 4 March 2015 at the Royal Conference Hall, 4th Floor of Empress Angkor Hotel and all subsequent sessions will also be held at Royal Conference Hall from 09:00 hours to 17:00 hours including lunch and coffee breaks.
The IPoA invited the United Nations General Assembly to consider conducting a comprehensive high-level midterm review of the progress made by the LDCs in implementing the Istanbul Programme of Action (para. 157). ESCAP resolution 70/3 requested the Executive Secretary, inter alia, to organize the Asia-Pacific regional high-level policy dialogue on the IPoA in early 2015 and to submit to the Commission at its seventy-first session a report on the progress achieved in implementing the said resolution.
