A comparison of the data on drought reveals that Asia and the Pacific region had the largest number of people affected compared with other regions. A total of 123 drought events in the region affected more than 1.31 billion people and caused damage amounting to over $53 billion over the last three decades. Compared to other disasters, drought is a slow onset event which is sometimes difficult to recognize until the damage to agriculture and water supplies is done.
