Right-based and People-centered Sustainable Development Financing

The project “Pilot Implementation of Low Carbon Green Growth Roadmap for Asia and the Pacific,” contributed to the enhancement of capacity of policymakers and key urban stakeholders in developing countries in the region to formulate and apply policy options that improve quality of urban growth, and in particular further formulate and apply policy options that help achieve internationally agreed development goals (IADGs) and millennium development goals (MDGs) in the area of urban resource management.
Water is a critical natural resource for the Asia-Pacific region’s growing urban areas which are home to 1.96 billion people (or 46 % of the region’s total population in 2012). It has been estimated that by 2025, 2.7 billion people will be living in Asia-Pacific urban areas.
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) convened a High-level Intergovernmental Meeting to review the regional implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing, 1995) and the outcome of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly (2000) for the ESCAP region, from 16-18 November 2009 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok. The Outcome Document was adopted on 18 November 2009.
