Driven by innovation and technology, central electronic clearing and settlements are at the core of modern payment systems which help to avoid multiple transactions. The South Asia region, having seen more development in wholesale as compared to retail payment systems, has huge opportunities for convergence to a regional payment system by effectively utilizing technological advancements in this area.
The 7th South Asia Economic Summit (SAES) was held in New Delhi from 5 to 7 November, under the theme “Towards South Asia Economic Union”, with ESCAP as one of the partner organizers.
ESCAP hosted a plenary session on Regional Cooperation for Food Security in South Asia and contributed to plenary sessions on regional connectivity and the Post-2015 Development Agenda. ESCAP also contributed to parallel sessions on trade facilitation, non-tariff barriers and macro-economic prospects.
The SPECA Governing Council will provide strategic guidance to the Programme, evaluate the efforts of its six Project Working Groups and review implementation of the current SPECA Work Plan for 2014-2015. (5 December 2014, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan)
The 2014 SPECA Economic Forum, focusing on the theme of "Improving connectivity: a key contribution of SPECA to the success of the Transformation Decade of Afghanistan", will bring together representatives of the Governments of SPECA countries, as well as Asian and Eurasian regional organizations and institutions in order to discuss how regional cooperation can most effectively contribute to the stabilization and economic development of Afghanistan during the transformation decade starting in 2014.
