As the role of international migration in the
modern world increases, its considerable
scale and impact, both positive and negative,
needs meaningful and, most importantly, informed
policymaking. To manage the volume and direction
of migration, the integration of migrants into the host
community, the presence of foreigners in the labour
market of a receiving country, or vice versa, participation
of nationals of a sending country in the workforce
of foreign States, etc., requires comprehensive statistics
showing not only the current situation, but also trends
over a period of time. The data should not only reflect
the scale of migration, but also needs to be disaggregated
by key variables (citizenship, gender, age, skills
and occupations, etc.) to reflect the structure of flows
and stocks of international migrants. A key role of migration
statistics is that, on the one hand, they suggest
which aspects of the migration process need regulation
and, on the other hand, they allow for the evaluation
of the effectiveness of decisions already taken and the
addition, if required, of necessary adjustments.
