Since 2008, the Environment and Development Division has been promoting the concept of eco-efficiency in infrastructure development as one of key tracks to shift towards green growth in support of a green economy. A series of activities to enhance understanding of policymakers on eco-efficient infrastructure were conducted. An initial project, entitled, “Development of Eco-efficient Water Infrastructure in Asia and the Pacific” was carried out for 2008-2011 with financial support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), with an aim of supporting ESCAP Member States to develop relevant policy options and strategic action plans. Several workshops and conferences were organized, and in-depth research to examine challenges, opportunities, and to draw out policy recommendations was conducted. In addition, pilot projects to demonstrate eco-efficient water infrastructure were implemented in several countries in the region. In Indonesia, a pilot project to implement non-structural measures such as bio-pores, land terracing, gully plug, regreening and/or re-forestation were designed and implemented with development of relevant action plans. The publication, entitled "Framework and Action Plans for River Rehabilitation of Small Streams in the Brantas River Basin, East Java, Indonesia" was the final report of this Indonesian project, including the project scheme, the process and action plans.
