Secretary-General meets with UN staff in the Republic of Korea

ESCAP East and North-East Asia Office and other UN agencies in the Republic of Korea co-organized the meeting of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres with UN staff on 8 February 2018 in Seoul. During the event attended by nearly 100 staff members from 14 UN offices across the country, the Secretary-General called for greater efforts to achieve the peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, while exchanging views on various topics such as the UN reform and sustainable development.

ESCAP and STEPI sign agreement to boost science, technology, and innovation for sustainable development

During the visit of the UN Under Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, ESCAP and Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 7 February 2018 in Seoul to strengthen collaboration on developing science, technology, and innovation (STI) policies in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Both sides agreed to facilitate learning and information exchange between national STI policy institutes in the Asia-Pacific region. They will also provide thought leadership on effective STI strategies and policies, and emerging STI opportunities and challenges in achieving sustainable development.

SDGs talk concert promotes peace and sustainability ahead of the PyeongChang Olympics

ESCAP East and North-East Asia Office co-hosted the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics & SDGs Talk Concert on 6 February 2018 in Seoul to raise public awareness of the SDGs and linkages with PyeongChang Olympics. It was the outcome of joint efforts by seven UN offices in the Republic of Korea, PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea. Attended by around 200 participants, the event conveyed the message of peace and highlighted the spirit of sports as a tool to achieve the SDGs. World-famous athletes and celebrities shared their own experiences and challenges of sustainable food vision, gender equality in sports, human-centered technology, equality for all, and empowerment of refugees in sports, all of which are relevant to the Goals.

ESCAP and MOFA highlight the need to encourage active participation of more stakeholders in developing renewable energy

ESCAP and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea co-hosted the 5th Northeast Asia Energy Security Forum on 12 December 2017 in Seoul to discuss renewable energy development in Northeast Asia and find solutions to overcome fiscal, market, technological and political challenges to renewables. In a new era of energy innovation and digitization, Northeast Asian energy experts highlighted the rapid expansion of renewable energy and its potential to bring about "disruptive change" in energy technology and market, replacing the conventional system. The forum also highlighted the need to promote active participation of diverse stakeholders such as citizens, cities and municipalities as 'prosumers' at individual and community levels.

Seoul conference calls for developing cost-effective scenarios for air pollution control in East and North-East Asia

As part of its work towards transboundary air pollution under NEASPEC, ESCAP East and North-East Asia Office supported the International Conference on Transboundary Air Pollution, co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea and the Korea Environment Institute, on 5 December 2017 in Seoul. During the Conference, government officials, subregional experts and experts from other regional mechanisms on air pollution examined the impact of transboundary air pollution and regional cooperative initiatives. They also discussed numerous ways for cooperation to effectively cope with transboundary air pollution in the subregion such as the cost-efficient scenario of air pollution control and linkage between the SDGs and air pollution.
